This weekend, why not try and recreate the cinema experience? With the coronavirus locking down movies and theatres, it can be pretty difficult to get that same giddy movie feeling from just watching the Office over and over again in your living room. Why not try and learn how to have a fun, movie theatre time in your own house?
One of the best bits of being in a cinema, for me, is definitely the seating. It just isn’t the same if you’re lying down on your bed. Find the comfiest chair you have and pile it up with pillows and blankets to recreate that plush, slightly sinking movie theatre chair experience. Alternatively, you could make a blanket fort, complete with mood lighting (read: a coloured plastic bag on top of a flashlight) and cuddly pillows.
Then, there’s the popcorn. Even with the influx of popcorn as some sort of weird influencer health diet food, the bags of ready-popped are ludicrously expensive when compared with their stovetop or microwave counterparts. A bag of no-brand microwave popcorn when I was in university would only set me back 99c, which was a steal compared to the $3.49 ‘value’ bag of the ready-popped. I was taught a great trick by an ex boyfriend to work out exactly when to pull the bag out of the microwave so that the popcorn to kernel ratio is perfect, without any risk of burning: you wait until the pause between pops is five seconds long. Once it hits that, you can’t pop any more kernels without running the chance of burning some of your corn!
Once your popcorn is cooked and seasoned to your liking, get ready to settle in for whatever movie you want to watch (or rewatch!). If you’re not sure what to watch, one of our favourite videos is actually about movies themselves — Lindsay Ellis’ breakdown on why going to the movies is so different to going to theatres, and the history of the cinema as a place. Super cool!
So, are you sitting comfortably? Make sure you turn off your phone and get ready for a relaxing, free, weekend!
