Maybe it’s time to introduce myself. My name’s Aliya, I’m twenty-one, and I work with the Thousand Dollar Journal team to bring out all of these blog posts every day (give or take!). Wednesdays are now becoming the day that I’ll share all about my saving journey, what I’m doing to save money, and all of the impulse purchases that you have to promise to shame me for — I really don’t need an LED ceiling projector, do I?
This week was a tough one. I just got a paycheck from my sidehustle, and I’d never been so shocked to see so much money in my bank account before. My immediate reaction was to spend it all on a new pair of shoes that I’d fallen in love with — clunky platform stompers from Doc Martens that made my feet look like they were dinosaur claws. Thankfully, after talking to my friends, who keep me accountable, I decided that saving the money would be a better idea. I already had a few shoes that were similar enough, and the more I thought about it, the less I liked the zipper down the front. Crisis averted!
Being vegan and keeping to a budget isn’t the easiest, either. It’s 2020, why do cafes charge so much for milk alternatives? Better for you, cheaper to manufacture, and less likely to make your tummy feel funny come 4pm, oat and soy milks quickly eat up the most space in my budget. So, this week, I’m going to steal my dad’s rolled oats that he absolutely never touches to try and make my own oat milk in the blender. We’ve tried making almond milk before, and it turned out pretty terrible, but hopefully this time with a little faith, trust, and pixie dust, it’ll all turn out okay! My fellow vegan friends swear by this recipe.
Speaking of making things yourself, I’ve been trying out bullet journalling for the first time, because finding a lined notepad is so much cheaper (or, depending how long you rummage around the bookshelves of your house, free!) than getting one with dates in it. I’m really enjoying whiling my time away watching the seemingly bottomless YouTube bullet journalling community (or, BuJo as they like to call themselves). I can’t seem to commit to much more than having a key for all of my bullet points, and a few habit trackers, but watching these people create beautiful spreads of their favourite films, foods, and budgets is such a fun way to spend my time, even if I never get around to drawing what seems like endless calendar pages. We do sell a journal, the Thousand Dollar Journal, but this is more for organising your daily life, rather than your daily spending.
That’s all for this week! I’ll see you next Thursday with updates on my milk venture, if I managed to avoid buying that LED ceiling projector (…it’s so pretty…), and whether I’ve managed to stick with the bujo-ing! Bye!
