Why not travel the world this weekend? We put out something a lot like this in our article, First Class for Free, but this is a much more settled down and lazy version, for people who are more resort-holiday inclined than Machu Picchu. Don’t worry, I’m one of you!
The British Museum has (somehow!) managed to catalogue everything it has online, meaning that you can do a virtual tour of their entire archive. It’s sorted by categories, such as religion, trade, art, and by country and era. You can see the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the building of Angkor Wat, or even the emergence of America just from the comfort of your living room. Or if art is more your style, the Musee D’Orsay in Paris has a virtual tour of its entire museum, allowing you to walk around the converted train station using your little Google Street View avatar.
Or maybe you’d rather be outdoors! Google Street View has really reached some amazing places, and you can use the little compass at the bottom left to stroll through Grand Central Station and the South Pole. Some of my favourite places to check out are Grand Canyon in America, the Colosseum in Rome, an d the partially-submerged Wilson Island in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
A lovely app that came out when everyone was feeling particularly isolated by this quarantine was Window Swap. A simple browser portal, it lets you look through your laptop screen as a window into someone else’s world. Just today I stared out of Roman’s window onto a sleepy Russian street, Uktu’s window in Ohio that her pet cat sleeps just under, Becky’s window in Texas, that seems to look out onto a wild deer reserve.
